Rogue One – 9/10

What starts off as an awkwardly rushed beginning, ends with perhaps the ten most brilliant minutes of all Star Wars films. The opening does give a great nod to the classics but separates itself right out the gate as a stand alone story by not having the scrolling text (not a spoiler considering Kathleen Kennedy mentioned this quite a while back). The first act of the film, in my opinion, felt choppy trying to give depth and background to characters too quickly. But once the middle hit, the rest of the film flowed flawlessly.

From the first shot to end, anyone can appreciate the cinematography and visual aesthetics in this film. Disney and Lucasfilms have outdone themselves with digital manipulation (which I cannot talk about now but you know what I mean if you see the movie). The music however, though in some ways a bit nostalgic, wasn’t up to par with the rest of the Universe. It felt like something was missing.

Also missing was the intimidation factor of “new” troopers. The Deathtroopers, like Phasma, were used for merchandising more than fear in this film. The word “elite” doesn’t come to mind when I see them on screen. I would have liked to seen more from the shoretroopers as well. But even without too much of them, this is the only Star Wars film that has a dark war feel to it. Even though you know the mission coming into the theater, the way the war was depicted gave me a greater appreciation for the Rebel Alliance and their mission in the episodes after to destroy the Deathstar.

I was a bit disappointed by not seeing certain characters make an appearance, but I am satisfied with the few things they did include for Star Wars fans. I left the theater wanting more to THIS story.

Overall, it is a Star Wars Story, yes, but is it the best way they could have told this story? Eh, some parts could have been told better. BUT the ending, which I hoped for even before seeing this, was so powerful and perfect that it brought me to tears. I will definitely be seeing this film again…and again.

P.S. Move over BB-8, K2S0 is the unit every adult wants as their best friend now.
